A CHRISTMAS CAROL
By Charles Dickens, Adapted and Directed by Lauren Keating. 1st Rehearsal: November 1st, 2022. Runs December 7th – December 24th, 2018. Matthews Theatre.
Any ethnicity for all roles. Please include actors of all abilities and gender identities for all roles.
Ebenezer Scrooge: Male Presenting. (50s+) Stoic, guarded, distrustful; the anti-Santa Clause, all hard edges and frosty insides. Scrooge repels all those around him, not with shouting or hysterics, but simply in the coldness he exudes. This coldness and distrust of the world is born from the abandonment and loneliness he suffered as a child, and the fears of heartbreak and poverty that plague him still. Over the course of his fantastical journey, the layers of self-protection, anger and coldness are melted away to reveal a joyful, warm, childlike and eager individual.
Old Jo: Any Gender Presentation. (50s+) Kind-hearted and scrappy, a kind of anti-Scrooge. Runs a blackmart goods ‘business,’ re-selling any and everything. Always a good time; tries to hide their soft heart with a fast-talking exterior. Good with comedy, but still grounded. (Scrooge swing/alternate/cover)
Bob Cratchit: Male Presenting. (40s-50s) Scrooge’s clerk. A family man of kindness and compassion, good humor and inerasable good spirits. A hard worker, devoted to his family and has compassion for his fellow humans, cares about his community. Puts up with a lot, but is always positive/optimistic.
Margaret Cratchit: Female Presenting. (40s-50s) The realist to Bob’s optimist. A fighter, fiercely intelligent, loving and warm, protective over Bob and their children; The homemaker and peacekeeper of the Cratchit family. She shares her husband Bob’s kind disposition but is quicker to anger. She sees more clearly the injustice in the world and does not suffer fools.
Christmas Past/Rose: Any Gender Presentation. Any age; a ghost and the most angelic of the four spirits we meet. Welcoming and warm, as well as tough and investigative. Good movement and vocal skills, especially a range of voice effects, which can stop Scrooge in his tracks. Also plays Rose: Lily’s sibling, a guest at Fred’s party. May also double as a Charity Sister.
Christmas Present/Laundress: Any Gender Presentation. (40s+) A spirit of immense jolliness and good spirit, such that it overflows from them. The incarnate of Christmas fun, with a talent for taking Scrooge to task when need be and is not afraid of confronting the darker side of things.
Christmas Yet to Come/Mr. Fezziwig: Male Presenting. (mid 40s+) a phantom; unspeaking and ominous presence with physical range and acuity. Also plays Mr. Fezziwig: Santa Claus incarnate. Someone with height and stature or tremendous charisma. A really magnetic person who we feel drawn to and trusting of. Jolly, warm, caring, inclusive of all and lover of a great party, as well as his family. He treats his clerks like family, and he means it. A generous soul. A great, if silly, dancer. Owner of a large mercantile business.
Jacob Marley: Male Presenting. (30s) Scrooge’s deceased business partner. Shrewd, intelligent in business but not so much in human relationships; strident in his youth, repentant in his ghostly return. A hard-nosed businessman. Harsh, cold; found a kindred spirit in Scrooge, both of them injured by the world and afraid of it. We see Marley at the age of his apprenticeship and as his ghostly, older self.
Fred: Male Presenting. (20s - 40) Scrooge’s nephew. Hearty, caring, joyful. Admired by the people of London. Recently married and very much in love. Throws a great party and is beloved by children. The beloved only son of Fan, who died birthing him. Uncle Scrooge can barely stand to look at him, so deep is the pain of the loss of his sister. Doubles with Belle’s Husband.
Lily: Female Presenting. (20s - 40) A big heart and a great wit. Recently married to Fred and very much in love. Feels the joy of the season, and shares it with all around her. Loves a good joke and a good party.
Mrs. Dilber/Mrs. Fezziwig: Female Presenting. Any age; Scrooge’s maid; she has a bit of an Amelia Bedelia vibe. Believes in ghosts, easily spooked, not great at gruel-making, but has a kind heart, an even temper and an obliviousness to Scrooge’s gruffer qualities. Happily employed by Scrooge for some time without much complaint. Also plays Mrs. Fezziwig, a natural hostess, a wonderfully warm and ebullient spirit, and quite a fun dancer.
Belle: Female Presenting. (20s - 40) An optimist with clear values and a vision for her future. Not afraid of a challenge, has a positive outlook, beloved by the young & old. Comes from a large family, and earns her own money in an apprenticeship in clothing manufacturing. A friend to the Fezziwig family; she lives with and is close to her own family. Scrooge’s finance, then ex. Doubles with a Charity Sister.
BETWEEN TWO KNEES
By The 1491s. Directed by Eric Ting. 1st Rehearsal: January 4th, 2023. Runs January 19th – February 10th, 2019. Matthews Theatre.
Co-production with Yale Repertory Theatre (Runs May 12th – June 4th, 2022).
Between Two Knees is an outrageously funny and wickedly subversive intergenerational tale of familial love, loss, and connection. This first play by the acclaimed intertribal sketch comedy troupe The 1491s fractures traditional narratives of the United States through the lens of the Native American experience. Smashing through where most textbooks stop teaching Native history—the 1890 massacre at Wounded Knee—Between Two Knees take us from the forced re-education at Indian boarding schools, through World War II, the Civil Rights Movement, Vietnam, the 1973 takeover at Wounded Knee, and maybe even breaks time itself.
All AEA roles are cast.
