Crossroads Theatre Company
Equity Producing Theatre in New Brunswick, NJ
Member overview
Founded in 1978 by Ricardo Khan and L. Kenneth Richardson in New Brunswick, New Jersey, the Crossroads Theatre Company made history by becoming New Jersey’s first professional theatre devoted to developing and producing works that built upon the African American theatrical canon. And upon that foundation, Crossroads built a national reputation for excellence, innovation and artistic courage, and created a focused presence for Black Theatre and culture unlike any other theatre of its generation.
Having produced over 100 works many of which were premiere productions by the world’s leading African and African American artists, Crossroads Theatre Company continues its commitment to works that examine the life, history and culture of people of the African Diaspora. Crossroads was the recipient of the 1999 Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre, the first African American theatre in the nation to be so honored. In addition Crossroads Theatre Company has received the National Governors’ Association Award for Distinguished Service in the Arts and the Theatre has also been designated a Major Impact Arts Institution by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State.
