Jersey City Theatre Center
Jersey City Theater Center (JCTC) is a nonprofit, 501c3 arts organization and manages programming at Merseles Studios and White Eagle Hall. We are committed to inspiring conversations about the important topics of our times through innovative and progressive performing and visual arts that embrace the diversity of Jersey City, bringing its community closer together and enhancing its quality of life.
JCTC’s season runs from September to June—and while we present a range of shows – the core of each season are three separate thematic series. JCTC selects topics global in scope yet relevant to the community then explores that theme using visual arts, theater, dance, monologues, and other performances. By using a diverse range of art-forms and genres – as well as artists – the theme of the series gets comprehensively examined, fomenting an atmosphere of discussion and exchange of ideas. Most events include a Talk-Back, where audiences and artists can discuss and ask each other questions, forming a basis for an enriching dialogue between artists and community.
Each thematic series begins with an art show, reception and artist talk and concludes with The BOX, a curated showcase of music, poetry, spoken-word, dance, film and other performances and in-between are separate shows, including theatre, dance, solo-show monologues, readings, and other performances at both Merseles Studios and White Eagle Hall. Each work presented explores the specific theme of the series. JCTC also hosts residency programs in dance and theater, subsidizing emerging voices and new artists, who produce work specifically to debut at JCTC and often then take that work to national and even international stages.
JCTC-KIDS – the children’s division of JCTC – provides professional theater and other arts programming to young people. The award winning and critically Puppetworks is JCTC resident marionette company, presenting productions of classic fairy tales, folklore and children through the classic art of marionette puppetry. JCTC’s Art-4-All program subsidizes tickets – made possible by the generous support of Jersey City Businesses and other funders – for under-served children.
JCTC presents theater and other programming at White Eagle Hall, a newly restored, historic theater with capacity 400 seated/800 standing and the adjacent Merseles Studios, which features artist studios, an Art Gallery, Black Box Theater, and a custom-made Marionette Puppet Theatre.
